Kenneth, let’s get a divorce. Emily Taylor stared at the blinking cursor on her phone screen, took a deep breath, and finally, without hesitation, pressed the send button. Chapter 1: Let’s Divorce
“Kenneth, let’s get a divorce.”
Emily Taylor stared at the blinking cursor on her phone screen, took a deep breath, and finally, without hesitation, pressed the send button.
She tossed her phone onto the coffee table and knelt on the floor, starting to pack her luggage.
Her hands moved swiftly, while her mind was in turmoil.
She had been married to Kenneth Carter for three years. In these three years, her love for him had crumbled to dust while he harboured affection for another woman, Cindy Fisher. That woman had just returned, and Emily had received a photo as proof – Cindy intimately leaning on Kenneth, smiling tenderly and brilliantly.
That smile pierced Emily deeply. What was even more ironic was that the photo was taken on her 23rd birthday.
Her husband had spent her birthday with another woman. It was absurd…
Their marriage had been arranged by Kenneth’s grandfather, and Emily had poured her heart into warming her husband’s affections, but she was now confronted with the painful truth.
In Kenneth’s eyes, she was just a cunning and vain woman, a world apart from his beloved formal loverl
Now, it was time to put an end to it.
Emily lifted her head, holding back the tears in her eyes, and then firmly closed the lid of her suitcase.
In the early hours of the morning, Kenneth entered the house, and Emily was carrying a large suitcase downstairs.
Thinking of the message this woman had sent a few hours ago, his face darkened.
“It’s the middle of the night, and you’re not sleeping. What kind of drama are you trying to pull now?” His voice retained its characteristic chill.
Emily raised her head.
The soft light illuminated Kenneth, casting a halo around him, highlighting his well-defined features and his deep, magnetic eyes.
Even though she had decided to cut ties with Kenneth, seeing him now made her heart to race uncontrollably, like a wayward deer.
She reminded herself sternly, ‘Don’t be a fool anymore.’ Afterward, Emily walked up to Kenneth, placed the suitcase down, and extracted a stack of documents from her bag.
“This is the divorce agreement. I’ve already signed it. Once you sign it, we’ll go to the Civil Affairs Bureau tomorrow to complete the formalities.”
Kenneth’s brow furrowed even more.
What did she mean? Was this another act?
He couldn’t believe that someone as vain as her would willingly divorce and give up her life of luxury.
“Emily, are you attempting yet another one of your schemes?” Kenneth didn’t even bother to look at it, his tone filled with impatience. He walked around her and prepared to go upstairs to freshen up.
Seeing him about to leave, Emily felt a sharp pain in her heart.
This was how he had always been—cold and impatient with her, unwilling to devote even a minute of his time on her…
Clenching her fists by her sides, Emily softly said, “Kenneth, what’s written on top signifies a clean break for me.”
Kenneth halted abruptly, turning to gaze at her in disbelief. The woman before him suddenly displayed a sweet smile, but her voice carried a trace of mockery and sarcasm.
“What? Are you having a hard time letting me go?” Her eyes, under the light, were like fragmented crystals, shimmering with a sparkling luster.
Kenneth had never witnessed this side of her. There was something distinct in her eyes compared to before, but before he could decipher it, her mention of struggling to let go resonated with him.
He picked up a pen, flipped to the last page, and indeed saw the content she had alluded to.
His hand paused for a moment, ignoring the inexplicable irritation welling up inside him, and signed his name with a decisive snap.
He then hurled the divorce agreement into Emily’s arms, a mocking smile materializing on his lips.
“What game are you playing? I’ll play along.”
Emily’s lips also curved with a hint of ambiguity as she replied,
“Tomorrow morning at 9 a.m., I’ll be waiting for you at the Civil Affairs Bureau.”
Emily dragged her suitcase and sat down on a bench by the fountain within the residential area.
She used to sit here often, sometimes waiting for Kenneth to come home, sometimes just sitting and watching people come and go.
Looking back now, she realized that she had lived a meager existence and lost herself over these years…
A decade ago, a near-fatal car accident had nearly claimed her life, and it was Kenneth who had risked everything to save her.
To her, Kenneth was not only the person she deeply loved but also her savior.
For him, she was willing to give everything, even her own life.
But unfortunately, he no longer remembered their shared past. She had passionately shielded him, only to discover she was merely a replacement. Now that the true protagonist, Cindy, had reappeared, it was time for Emily to take control and reclaim her true self.
She removed the diamond ring from her finger, once a symbol of their marriage, and placed it in her pocket.
With one last glance at the two-story house that had once been her home, she stood up and walked towards the entrance of the residential area.
From a distance, she spotted a silver-gray sports car parked on the roadside, leaning against it a tall figure.
Emily took a deep breath, as if trying to bury all her sorrows beneath the night.
Then, a smile graced her lips, and she walked toward the man.
But as she got closer, Emily almost couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
Despite the late hour and the deserted surroundings, this man was dressed as if involved in some covert operation – wearing a mask, sunglasses, a baseball cap, and even a scarf wound tightly around his neck. If she didn’t know better, she would have suspected him of engaging in illegal activities in the dead of night.
Seeing Emily’s teasing expression, the man felt a twinge of embarrassment and turned his head away. “It’s a professional habit… You know how my fans can be.”
Emily smiled knowingly.
He was Grant Jones.
With his exceptional looks and acting prowess, he was currently the hottest young actor in the entertainment industry and the most favored scion of the esteemed Young family. He was also her best friend.
He was also her best friend.
Grant took the suitcase from Emily, then removed his coat and draped it over her. Only then did he take off his sunglasses, focusing on Emily’s slightly chilly and charming face.
The girl who had once been radiant, with every smile enchanting and captivating, had become the solitary woman she saw today.
Emily discerned the message within his gaze, and responded with a gentle smile,
“I’m fine, really.”
Grant parted his lips, but was at a loss for words.
Within his eyes, there was a mix of anger, confusion, but most of all, heartache…
Grant extended his right hand, resting it gently on Emily’s delicate shoulder. With his signature charm, he smiled and said, “Welcome back, Emi.”
